This Year's Theme: "The Heart of Dickens"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(from Kevin Patterson)
The theme this year is "The Heart of Dickens."  This refers both to the Fair and the man, but let's start with the man.  Charles Dickens believed that writing could play a role in fixing the problems of the world, that entertainment could be educational ...and inspirational. Imagine that.  We celebrate his story of transformation in a Christmas Carol throughout the Fair.  As cast members, we embody the spirit of goodwill and conviviality demonstrated by Mr. Fezziwig, the Pickwick club, the Cratchit family, and so many more.  This year, we want to highlight what Dickens has shown us about social justice, compassion, and the spirit of generosity.  We wish to remind people of this, especially during such a polarizing time in our country's history.
Our 2016 advertising slogan will therefore be "Discover the Heart of Dickens".
By highlighting this aspect of what we do... this year, of all years, we hope to encourage and support what is best in this world and in our selves ...the way Mr. Dickens showed us it can be.  There will be an evolving "Heart of Dickens" page on dickensfair.com where we will share thoughts, provocative quotes, images and videos.   Please let us know if you find a quote, satirical cartoon, a Victorian lithographic image, or anything that speaks to this theme.  We would also love to include your thoughts and customer stories as the season unfolds.  Please send to me via kevin.redbarn@gmail.com  This will be an ongoing part of our website, and our focus, for years to come.
"No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it to anyone else."  ~Charles Dickens
Marketing Update ~ Welcome Shannon!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(from Kevin Patterson)

We are delighted to announce that Shannon (née Wood) Damnavits will be (re) joining our team. She is now the Dickens Fair Marketing Director, taking over these responsibilities from me. Shannon worked with us in this capacity in the early 2000s before leaving with her husband Jan and two daughters Brooke and Sloan for Canada. There she worked on the Communications and Community Engagement Team for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and continues to design and execute marketing and communications campaigns for non-profit, sport and entertainment organizations

Shannon will be a great addition to our team (again) and will be focusing on Social Networking with Cat, and other new media opportunities as we continue shifting away from traditional advertising. Please contact her via email with any opportunities or ideas: shannon@matrixeventgroup.com

A New Dancefloor for Fezziwigs!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(from Kevin Patterson)
A new dance Floor for Fezziwigs!  Red Barn Productions has purchased a brand new "sprung" dance floor to replace the aging floor we have been renting for many years.   After much research and consulting with Mr. Fezziwig himself (our own David Batzloff), O'Mara Sprung Floors in Michigan won out.   The new floor is made from Golden White Ash and will provide an excellent and durable dance surface, with great shock absorption and 'return'.   It will be the exact same size as the previous floor.   We look forward to seeing it installed and taking a 'turn' as much as you do!
Dark Garden's New Reveal
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(from Kevin Patterson)

Red Barn Productions and Dark Garden will be working together this year to once again present the artistry of the Dark Garden windows at the Fair!  Autumn will teach her annual workshop and her team will handle the window "prep and dress" as usual.

The difference is that Dark Garden will not have a retail shop at the Fair this year.  ...Just the windows!  If you are interested in purchasing any Dark Garden delights, they do have a store in San Francisco's Hayes Valley.  Please contact them via their website: http://www.darkgarden.com/

Parking Fees Lowered

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(from Kevin Patterson)
One of our ongoing priorities is to make participation in the Dickens Fair as easy and affordable as possible.   In this spirit, last year, we created online registration and eliminated the registration fee.  This year, working with the Cow Palace, we are reducing the cost of parking! We are therefor happy to announce that the price of Participant Parking Passes will go from $45 to $30.
Britex Promotion Reminder
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(from Kevin Patterson)

Don't miss out on your Dickens Fair discount at Britex Fabrics!

The Great Dickens Christmas Fair and Britex Fabrics of San Francisco, are working together to showcase the quality and beauty of costuming at the Fair, and to encourage the creation of new costumes by patrons and participants alike.  Select Dickens Fair costumes will be displayed in the Union Square Britex store windows between Halloween and the Fair's opening weekend!

We get discounts!  ...Registered Dickens Fair participants (from EITHER 2015 or '16) will receive a "one-time" 20% discount at the store.  Shop anytime between September 1 and December 31, 2016.  Discount applies to regularly priced fabrics and select notions.  One discount per participant is allowed.  To receive the discount simply bring your 2015 or 2016 gate pass and a current photo I.D.  Once you have used your discount, Britex will validate the back of your gate pass.

The discount is not available online, but please visit britexfabrics.com to view some of what's available in their amazing store.  Your discount can only be redeemed by visiting the Britex store in person (see website for directions).  Besides, the giant wall filled with hundreds of bolts of colorful fabrics is an experience not to be missed.  Local tip: best parking is at the Sutter/Stockton Garage 2.5 blocks to the North.  Enjoy!

Oh, and please consult the guidelines before you design ;-)

Temperance Union is Recruiting

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(from Harry Steeper)
Temperance is primarily a Meet and Greet/Improv troupe. We need supporting players. Supporting players can be any age and male or female. Willingness to sing is required. But you don't have to be a professional singer. In Temperance we sing enthusiastically. Except for the maid, Temperance actors wear upper-class costumes. I would consider middle-class characters if costuming approves, as Temperance had many middle-class supporters. We are also looking to cast three major characters: The Temperance Lady, The Maid and Miss Auroa. I will provide character details to any interested actors.
I am willing to consider part-time official members who can commit to at least 50% of the run. Part-timers could include Post Cards people looking for gate passes if our schedules don't conflict. I also welcome members of other groups who wish to drop in. The last few years we have had two main gigs.. Drop-ins are greatly appreciated for these gigs as they help us field a larger group.
Anyone out in Facebook land that might be interested please PM me (Harry Steeper) on Facebook. I can also be emailed at haroldfitz@hotmail.com
PEERS: The 23rd Annual Le Bal des Vampires ~ Nov. 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(from Cathleen Myers)

Do join us for a truly gorgeous evening of music, dance, and costumes.  Dance the night away with the San Francisco Bay Area's most glamorous Undead at the 23rd Annual Le Bal des Vampires on Saturday, November 5, at the allegedly haunted Alameda Elks Lodge at 2255 Santa Clara Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501. There will once again be two separate dance floors: The elegant Edwardian grand ballroom for beautiful waltzes and other Victorian and vintage ballroom dance music by the early music ensemble Bangers and Mash; and the Nightfall Club, located in the Lodge's atmospheric Rathskellar, hosted by DJ's Dark Moon and Persephone, playing dance music of a more modern nature for free-style dancing. Ball guests may wander to and fro between the dance floors as they please.

The event features light snacks, two no-host bars for our mortal guests, and special performances by Bella Donna and by the notorious Theater of the Vampires. Historical costume from the century of your rebirth, Gothic or Fantasy costume, or modern evening dress is admired but not required.

It's wise to order your tickets early: No tickets will be sold at the door and the event always sells out in advance. For ticket and event information, see http://www.peersdance.org/vamp16.html If you have additional questions, you may email peers@peersdance.org or call us at (510) 522-1731.
